Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Improbable hypothesis by Bezzenberger, who reconstructs *h₂odʰ-tro-, comparing Proto-Germanic *edaraz (“enclosure, shelter”) and Proto-Slavic *òdrъ (“bed”): both the Greek suffixation and the formation in *-tro- remain unexplained. According to Frisk, this word belongs to ὄστρακον (óstrakon, “earthen vessel”) and ὄστρεον (óstreon, “oyster”), assuming a prior meaning "protecting roof", for which he gives a parallel in Latin testudō (“tortoise; protecting roof”). Since there is no Indo-European etymology, the word may be Pre-Greek, although there appears no further indication for this.
