[edit]Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *weyd- (“to see”), the same root of εἶδος (eîdos, “form, image”) and ἰδέα (idéa, “look, appearance”). For the formation, compare ἱκανός (hikanós) and πιθανός (pithanós).
