From Proto-Hellenic *wéidos, from Proto-Indo-European *wéydos (seeing, image), from *weyd- (to see). Cognate to Sanskrit वेदस् (védas), Proto-Slavic *vidъ, English wit; see also εἴδομαι (eídomai, to appear, seem, resemble).[1]
