ἕζομαι
Appearance
Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Hellenic *heďďomai, from Proto-Indo-European *séd-ye-, from *sed-. Compare ἵζω (hízō, “set”). Cognate with Old English sittan (English sit), Old Norse sitja and Old High German sizzen.
Pronunciation
[edit]- (5th BCE Attic) IPA(key): /héz.do.mai̯/
- (1st CE Egyptian) IPA(key): /ˈ(h)e.zo.mɛ/
- (4th CE Koine) IPA(key): /ˈe.zo.mɛ/
- (10th CE Byzantine) IPA(key): /ˈe.zo.me/
- (15th CE Constantinopolitan) IPA(key): /ˈe.zo.me/
Verb
[edit]ἕζομαι • (hézomai) (chiefly poetic)
- to sit, sit oneself
Usage notes
[edit]There is no active present *ἕζω (*hézō), but there are transitive tenses as though they derive from it (later forms): See ἵζω (hízō) for
- εἷσα (heîsa),
- middle aorist εἱσάμην (heisámēn) (with the sense ἱδρύω (“dedicate temples statues”)),
- middle future εἵσομαι (heísomai),
- passive perfect εἷμαι (heîmai)
