[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *h₁el-nó-s, from *h₁el- (“deer”). Compare ἔλαφος (élaphos, “red deer”), Lithuanian elnias (“deer, stag, hart”), Russian оле́нь (olénʹ, “deer”), Russian лось (losʹ, “elk”), Old Armenian եղն (ełn, “hind”).
