Etymology
[edit]If the form without the initial vowel is secondary, the root may have been Proto-Indo-European *h₂merd-, which is cognate with Sanskrit मृद्नाति (mṛdnāti, “to pound, triturate”), Latin mordeō (“I bite”) and Proto-Germanic *smertaną (“to hurt”).
