[edit]Borrowed from Old Javanese baroṅ, barwaṅ (“bear”), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *baʀuaŋ (“bear”). Doublet of ᬩᬳᬸᬂ (baung, “pig-shaped spirit”) and ᬩᬭᭀᬂ (barong, “beneficent force of nature”).
