Borrowed from Old Javanese baroṅ, barwaṅ (bear), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *baʀuaŋ (bear). Doublet of ᬩᬳᬸᬂ (baung, pig-shaped spirit) and ᬩᬭᭀᬂ (barong, beneficent force of nature).
