Borrowed from Old Javanese baroṅ, barwaṅ (literally “bear”), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *baʀuaŋ (“bear”). Doublet of ᬩᬳᬸᬂ (baung, “pig-shaped spirit”) and ᬩ᭄ᬭᬸᬯᬂ (bruang, “bear”).
