Etymology 1
[edit]From Angkorian Old Khmer pañ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *paɲʔ (“to shoot”). Cognate with Khmu ປິຍ (piny), Halang pĕng, Mon ပန်, Pacoh pánh, Vietnamese bắn and Central Nicobarese [Nancowry] fòin (“crossbow”).
