Etymology

Uncertain; though speculatively connected with 자다〮 (càtá, “to sleep”), the vowel discrepancy is difficult to explain. Alternatively, may be connected to ᄌᆞᆷ〮다〮 (cómtá, “to sink”); compare Korean 주무시다 (jumusida, “(honorific) to sleep”).
