Burmese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *yipᴸ ~ yupᴸ (to sleep), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-y(i/u)p (idem). Cognate with Lolopo yixr (to lie down, to sleep), Jingpho yup (to sleep), Drung ip (to sleep), Yakkha युप्‍मा (jup‍ma, to sleep) and Naxi yil (to sleep); note similarity with Old Chinese (OC *qemʔ, *qeb, “bad sleep, nightmare”). Note also (OC *qrɯb, “settlement, city”), (OC *ʔsib, *sʰib, *zib, “to thatch”), which may stem from the same root; for a semantic parallel regarding the connection between "rest, sleep" and "cover, reside" in an unrelated language, note English couch and city, both from the same Indo-European root (STEDT). Doublet of သိပ် (sip).
