From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *sjam (iron). Cognate with Old Chinese (OC *koːd, *slem, *l̥ʰeːmʔ, “sharp; spade, hoe, other sharp tools”) (STEDT), as well as (OC *ʔsluːm, “headless nail”).[1]
