Particularly: “Diverse array of meanings, all which are grouped together by MED. STEDT mentions the senses:
  • "string as beads"
  • "go by near, skim along"
  • "sing, chant"
  • "dim, as eyes from age"

and gives none of them etymologies.

Luce mentions the "sing" sense, tentatively adducing Old Chinese (OC *kjes, *ɡe, *ɡreʔ, “singing performer”), (OC *kre, *ɡreʔ, “female singing girl”);[1] these seem outdated. He also mentioned the "thread" sense, but adduces no cognates for it.[2]
