Etymology 1

From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *wyatᴸ (to wear clothes), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *w(y)a-t ~ wit (to wear; to clothe). Cognate with Nuosu (vit), Lolopo veixr (to wear, to put on (clothes)), Athpare वाट्मा (waʈma, to put on clothes, to wear), वाप्‍मा (wapma, to wear), and possibly Old Chinese (OC *qɯl, *qɯls, “clothing”) (STEDT).
