Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (rân "make a barrier on one side"), and apparently not mentioned by Luce 1981. Bears striking resemblance in phonetics and semantics to Old Chinese 欄 (OC *ɡ·raːn, “railing, balustrade”), 攔 (OC *ɡ·raːn, “to obstruct, impede”), 攬 (OC *ɡ·raːmʔ, “to grasp, take hold of”), 纜 (OC *ɡ·raːms, “hawser, cable rope”).”
