[edit]From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *ʔ-bu ~ *pu (“to be born; birth; bud; bloom”). Cognate with Jingpho pu (“to bloom, bud”), Old Chinese 阜 (OC *buʔ, “big mount; abundant”) (STEDT), as well as, per Luce, 苞 (OC *pruː, “bud; luxuriant”).[2]
