Mon

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Origin unclear. This term appears as verb as well as adverb in Middle Mon, but is not attested in Old Mon. Compare Old Burmese [script needed] (plan) (> Burmese ပြန် (pran, to return, to do again)). Shorto (1971) suggests that it might be a borrowing from Burmese လန် (lan, to be turned up) made into a causative formation (i.e. a Mon equivalent of Burmese လှန် (hlan, to turn inside out)).[1][2]
