Etymology

From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *s-nəw (to awake, awaken); cognate with Lahu [script needed] (nɔ̂, to awaken from sleep) (STEDT). Luce additionally compares Old Chinese (OC *ŋaːs, “to awaken, become aware”), (OC *ŋaːs, “to wake up”).[1]
