Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *dwa(ː)ŋ (hole, orifice, cave, pit, well (for water)), or less likely, from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *t/duŋ (middle, navel). In the former case, cognate with Old Chinese (OC *doːŋ, *doːŋs, “hole, cave, cavity”), and in the latter, (OC *tuŋ, *tuŋs, “middle”) (STEDT).
