[edit]တောက် (tauk) + တောက် (tauk) + ကြော် (krau, “fried”), referring to a fried ground-meat patty. MED gives the sense of တောက် (tauk) as either "to cry (of a deer)", which seems unlikely, or "to blaze, shine", which is a bit more likely; another likely option is that တောက် (tauk) refers to a sense "hit or cut by a single, light blow", which does not seem to be listed by MED, but which is listed in STEDT and linked to Proto-Lolo-Burmese *ʔtök (“to cut by a blow, hack away at”), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m/r-tuk (“to cut, knock, pound”). In this case, compare Old Chinese 觸 (OC *tʰjoɡ, “to butt, knock against”).
