Etymology

From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *s/ʔ-ŋa² (to borrow, lend), from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *r/s-ŋ(y)a (idem). Cognate with Akha [script needed] (ŋà, to borrow, lend), Tibetan བརྙན (brnyan, to borrow) (STEDT); Luce additionally adduces Old Chinese (OC *ŋos, “to dwell; to attribute”) as a cognate.[1]
