Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *s/ʔ-ŋa² (“to borrow, lend”), from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *r/s-ŋ(y)a (“idem”). Cognate with Akha [script needed] (ŋà, “to borrow, lend”), Tibetan བརྙན (brnyan, “to borrow”) (STEDT); Luce additionally adduces Old Chinese 寓 (OC *ŋos, “to dwell; to attribute”) as a cognate.[1]
