Etymology

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Not given an etymology by STEDT (khanʼ "estimate, calculate"), and not mentioned by Luce 1981. Looks a bit like it could be related to Proto-Sino-Tibetan *ka(n/ŋ) (to know, see), whence Old Chinese (OC *kʰaːn, *kʰaːns, “to look, consider, observe”), with a semantic shift "see" > "consider" > "estimate, assign".”
