Etymology

Disputed. In official material, the government of Myanmar states it derives from ကမ်းယံ (kam:yam), the name of an ancient ethnic group. Other suggestions include a derogatory term applied to non-Buddhists or from a word meaning "aboriginal", or from Mon ကရေင်.
