[edit]From Pali udaya or Sanskrit उदय (udaya, “appearance, emergence, rise; income, profit, return; development, improvement; consequence, result; etc”); probably via Old Khmer °udaya, °ūdeya, °ūdaiya°, uday, udaiya (“growth, increase; appearance, emergence, rise; birth; sunrise, dawn; income, profit, revenue; advantage, benefit, interest; wealth; prosperity; etc”). Compare Modern Khmer ឧទយ (ʼŏtôy), ឧទ័យ (ʼŏtôy).
