Etymology
[edit]From Burmese ဟံသာဝတီ (hamsawa.ti), from Pali haṃsāvatī (literally “she who has swans”), from the legend that two swans were seen at the place by Gautama Buddha, who then gave a prophecy that a city would be established there.
