From Sanskrit माष (māṣa, particular weight of gold). Compare Malay mas, emas. Cognate with Isan มาด, Lao ມາດ (māt), Northern Thai ᨾᩣ᩠ᨯ, Khün ᨾᩣ᩠ᨯ, ᦙᦱᧆ (maad).
