From Proto-Tai *tamᴬ. Cognate with Isan ตำ, Lao ຕຳ (tam), Northern Thai ᨲᩣᩴ (tam¹), Khün ᨲᩣᩴ (tam¹), ᦎᧄ (ṫam), Shan တမ် (tǎm), Ahom 𑜄𑜪 (taṃ), Zhuang daem.
