[edit]From Pali tathāgata (literally “(one who has) thus gone”), from tathā (“such; thus; accordingly”) + gata (“gone”); ultimately from Sanskrit तथागत (tathāgata, idem), from तथा (tathā, idem) + गत (gata, idem); equivalent to Thai ตถา + คต (kót). Cognate with Old Khmer tathāgata, taṭhṭhāgata; Modern Khmer តថាគត (tâthaktâ).
