Etymology

From Pali tathāgata (literally (one who has) thus gone), from tathā (such; thus; accordingly) + gata (gone); ultimately from Sanskrit तथागत (tathāgata, idem), from तथा (tathā, idem) + गत (gata, idem); equivalent to Thai ตถา +‎ คต (kót). Cognate with Old Khmer tathāgata, taṭhṭhāgata; Modern Khmer តថាគត (tâthaktâ).
