[edit]Inherited from Proto-Tai *ɗuəŋꟲ (“coconut grub”). Compare Middle Chinese 蟲 (MC drjuwng, “insect; bug”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨯ᩠ᩅ᩶ᨦ, Lao ດ້ວງ (dūang), Lü ᦷᦡᧂᧉ (ḋong²), Zhuang nduengj (“grub”). Also compare Vietnamese đuông and Khmer ដួង (duəng).
