Etymology

[edit]

Cognate with Lao ກະທຸງ (ka thung, pelican).

Possibly from กระ (grà) +‎ ทุง (tung).

Its ultimate etymology is uncertain. Shorto proposed to be Austroasiatic.[1] Compare Khmer ទុង (tung) and Vietnamese nông, both also meaning "pelican".
