[edit]Inherited from Prakrit 𑀫𑀸𑀇 (māi), from Sanskrit मातृ (mātṛ, “mother”). Cognate with Assamese মাই (mai), Bengali মেয়ে (meẏe), Bhojpuri माई (māī), Maithili माई (māī), and Nepali माउ (māu).
