[edit]Derived from Classical Persian حَوَالِی (hawālī, “vicinity, outskirts”), from Arabic حَوَالَيْ (ḥawālay, “around”), with a semantic shift, probably due to the suburban setting, or alternatively from Arabic حَوَالِي (ḥawālī, “private space”), referring to the nature or function popularized in Mughal India.
