Etymology

Derived from Classical Persian حَوَالِی (hawālī, vicinity, outskirts), from Arabic حَوَالَيْ (ḥawālay, around), with a semantic shift, probably due to the suburban setting, or alternatively from Arabic حَوَالِي (ḥawālī, private space), referring to the nature or function popularized in Mughal India.
