[edit]Inherited from Sanskrit हंस (haṃsa), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *źʰansás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰansás, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰh₂éns. Cognate with Assamese হাঁহ (hãh), Bengali হাঁস (hãs) and Punjabi ہنس / ਹੰਸ (hansă). Wider cognates include Albanian gatë, English goose, Russian гусь (gusʹ) and Latvian zoss.
