Inherited from Prakrit 𑀤𑀻𑀯𑀸𑀮𑀻 (dīvālī), from Sanskrit दीपावलि (dīpāvali), दीपावली (dīpāvalī, literally “row of lamps”). Doublet of દીપાવલી (dīpāvalī). Cognate with Marathi दिवाळी (divāḷī), Marwari दियाळी (diyāḷī).
