[edit]Inherited from Prakrit 𑀤𑀁𑀟 (daṃḍa), from Sanskrit दण्ड (daṇḍa), from a substrate language. Compare Munda: Mundari ଦାଣ୍ଡି (dāṇḍi, “small stick”) and Santali ᱫᱚᱬᱴᱚ (dôṇṭô, “thick stick, club”) and Dravidian: Malayalam തണ്ട് (taṇṭŭ, “stick, club”).
Cognate with Bengali ডান্ডা (ḍanḍa), Hindustani ڈنڈا / डंडा (ḍaṇḍā), and Punjabi ڈنڈا / ਡੰਡਾ (ḍaṇḍā)
