Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀟𑀁𑀟𑀕 (ḍaṃḍaga), from Sanskrit दण्डक (daṇḍaka), from दण्ड (daṇḍa) . Doublet of डाँड़ (ḍā̃ṛ) and दंड (daṇḍ). Cognate to Bengali ডান্ডা (ḍanḍa), Punjabi ਡੰਡਾ (ḍaṇḍā).
