Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀚𑁂𑀝𑁆𑀞 (jeṭṭha, elder brother), from Sanskrit ज्येष्ठ (jyḗṣṭha, eldest brother, first, chief). Cognate with Kachchi જેઠ (jeṭh), Marwari जेठ (jeṭh), and Sindhi ڄيٺُ (jeṭhu).
