[edit]Inherited from Prakrit 𑀚𑀟𑁆𑀟 (jaḍḍa), from Sanskrit जड (jaḍa), of non-Indo-Aryan origin. Cognate with Bengali জাড় (jaṛ, “cold”), Kashmiri زَد (zad, “stupid”), Marathi जाड (jāḍ, “thick”), Odia ଜାଡ଼ୁଆ (jāṛuā, “dumb”), and Sindhi خَرُ (jaru, “wretch”).
