Inherited from Prakrit 𑀔𑀸𑀡𑀺 (khāṇi), 𑀔𑀸𑀡𑀻 (khāṇī), from Sanskrit खानि (khāni, “mine”). Cognate with Punjabi ਖਾਣ (khāṇ), Hindi खान (khān), Marathi खाण (khāṇ).
