[edit]Etymology
[edit]Learned borrowing from Sanskrit स्वप्न (svápna), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *swápnas, from Proto-Indo-European *swépnos (“sleep, dream”), from *swep- (“to sleep”). Cognate with Assamese সপোন (xopün) and Hindi सपना (sapnā) and, distantly, Ancient Greek ὕπνος (húpnos) (whence English hypnosis). Doublet of খোয়াব (khōẇab) and শোয়া (śōẇa, “to lie down, go to bed”).
