Semi-learned borrowing from Sanskrit स्वप्न (svápna) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *swápnas, from Proto-Indo-European *swépnos, from *swep-. Cognates include Latin somnus, Ancient Greek ὕπνος (húpnos) and Old English swefn (English sweven). Doublet of स्वप्न (svapna). Doublet of ख़्वाब (xvāb).
