Learned borrowing from Sanskrit सहस्र (sahasra), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *saȷ́ʰásram, from Proto-Indo-European *sm̥-ǵʰéslom; cognate with Classical Persian هزار (hazār) (whence Bengali হাজার (hajar)), Ancient Greek χίλιοι (khílioi) (whence English kilo-) and Latin mille (whence English mile, million, milli-).
