Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Prakrit 𑀪𑀲𑁆𑀲𑀇 (bhassaï, to fall, decline, collapse), from Sanskrit भ्रश्यति (bhraśyati, to fall, ruin, collapse), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *bʰraśyati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰraс́yati, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrn̥ḱ-yeti, from *bʰrenḱ- (to deviate, corrupt), with semantic shift in Prakrits from moral decline or collapse to literal (physical) collapse or fall, often upon water. Cognate with Sylheti ꠜꠣꠅꠀ (báoa), Assamese ভাহিবা (bhahiba), Odia ଭାସିବା (bhāsibā), Maithili भासब (bhāsab), Hindi भस्ना (bhasnā), Nepali भासिनु (bhāsinu), Sinhalese බසිනවා (basinawā, to descend). Doublet of ভ্রংশ (bhroṅśo), ভ্রষ্ট (bhrośṭo), and ভাটা (bhaṭa).
