Bengali

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀪𑀸𑀟 (bhāḍa, hire) (or 𑀪𑀸𑀟𑀬 (bhāḍaya)), from Early Eastern Prakrit भाट (bhāṭa) (or diminutive भाटक (bhāṭaka)), degeminated from an even earlier *भाट्ट- (bhāṭṭa-, wages), from Vedic Sanskrit *भार्त- (bhārta-, (anything) related to servants), vriddhi of भृत (bhṛta, hired, paid; hired servant, originally meant "carried, brought", with meaning changed as servants were hired to carry out work), a compound of भृ (bhṛ, to carry, bring) +‎ -त (-ta, -ed). Cognate with Assamese ভাৰা (bhara), Odia ଭଡ଼ା (bhaṛā), Hindi भाड़ा (bhāṛā), Punjabi ਭਾੜਾ (bhāṛā). Compare also Hindi भत्ता (bhattā, allowance), Sanskrit भृति (bhṛti, hire, wages), Bengali ভড় (bhoṛ), ভইড় (bhoiṛ, human leg; soldier, servant) — all ultimately of the same origin.
