Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Middle Bengali বিহান (bihan), from an earlier বিহানী (bihani), from Prakrit *𑀯𑀺𑀆𑀳𑀺𑀦𑀻 (*viāhinī), from Sanskrit *विवाहिनी (vivāhinī, “(one) aligned by marriage”), from विवाह (vivāha, “marriage”) + -इनी (-inī). Cognate with Assamese বিয়নী (bini), Gujarati વહેવણ (vahevaṇ), વેહ્વણ (vehvaṇ), Marathi विहीण (vihīṇ). Doublet of বিয়াই (biẏai), বিয়ে (biẏe), and বিবাহ (bibaho).
