Etymology 1
[edit]Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀯𑀸𑀟𑀻 (vāḍī), from Early Eastern Prakrit ৱাটী (vāṭī), the feminine form of ৱাট (vāṭa, “enclosure”), from Vedic Sanskrit *ৱার্ত্র (vārtra, “any fenced or enclosed structure”), vriddhi of ৱৃত (vṛta, “covered, enclosed”), a compound of the root ৱৃ (vṛ, “to cover, surround”) + -ত (-ta, “-ed”).
Cognate with Assamese বাৰী (bari), Punjabi ਬਾੜੀ (bāṛī, “garden”), Hindi बाड़ी (bāṛī).
