Earlier a disyllabic word (/ba.ul/), from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀯𑀸𑀉𑀮 (vāula), from Sanskrit वातुल (vātula, affected by wind; mad), from वात (vāta, wind). Cognate with Bengali বাউল (baul), Sylheti ꠛꠣꠃꠟ (baul), Hindi बावला (bāvlā).
