Etymology

Borrowed from Classical Persian بنگاله (bangālah), ultimately derived from Sanskrit वङ्ग (vaṅga) + Bengali আল (al, mound) + the Persian suffix ـی (-i). Compare Bengali বাঙ্গালী (baṅgalī), Arabic بَنْغَالِيّ (banḡāliyy), Persian بنگالی (bangâli), Hindi बंगाली (baṅgālī).
