Etymology

Inherited from Middle Bengali পরহা (porha), from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀧𑀭𑀺𑀳𑀢𑀺 (parihati), from Sanskrit परिदधाति (paridadhāti, “to place around; to put on clothes”), composed of परि- (pari-, “around”) +‎ दधाति (dadhāti, “to place”). Cognate with Odia ପହରିବା (paharibā), Maithili 𑂣𑂯𑂱𑂩𑂥 (pahirab), Hindi पहिर्ना (pahirnā). Doublet of পরিধান (poridhan).
