[edit]Etymology
[edit]Due to the unique aspiration shared with cognates in Odia ନିଭାଇବା (nibhāibā) and Nepali निभ्नु (nibhnu), the word is derived from the conflation of two separate roots:
- phonologically from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀦𑀺𑀩𑁆𑀩𑀸𑀳𑁂𑀇 (*nibbāhei), from Prakrit 𑀦𑀺𑀯𑁆𑀯𑀳𑁂𑀇 (nivvahei), from Sanskrit निर्वाहयति (nirvāhayati, “to cause to carry out, perform”), from निस्- (nis-, “out”) + वाहयति (vāhayati, “to cause to carry”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *woǵʰ-éye-ti. Cognate with Hindi निभाना (nibhānā), Punjabi ਨਿਭਾਉਣਾ (nibhāuṇā), Sindhi نِڀائِڻُ (nibhāiṇu), Gujarati નિભાવવું (nibhāvvũ), Marathi निभावणे (nibhāvṇe).
- semantically from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀦𑀺𑀩𑁆𑀩𑀯𑁂𑀇 (*nibbavei), from Prakrit 𑀦𑀺𑀯𑁆𑀯𑀯𑁂𑀇 (nivvavei), from Sanskrit निर्वापयति (nirvāpayati, “to cause to blow out, extinguish”), from निस्- (nis-) + वापयति (vāpayati, “to cause to blow”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂woh₁-éye-ti. Cognate with Assamese নুমুৱা (numua), Marathi निवविणें (nivaviṇẽ), Sinhalese නිමනවා (nimanawā), Nepali निम्नु (nimnu).
An unconflated variant from the second root is still evident as নেবা (neba).
